If you’ve been considering replacing or upgrading your HVAC system, you’ve likely heard about new refrigerant changes. Maybe you’re wondering what these changes mean for you and your Annapolis home. At FIXED! HVAC Services, we’re here to provide clarity and practical advice about these important industry developments.
New Refrigerant Regulations
The HVAC industry has experienced hurdles with each refrigerant transition. One of the recent changes is the requirement of manufacturers to use refrigerants that have a lower GWP (global warming potential). As of the end of 2024, equipment that uses R410a was phased out, and is no longer available. Starting in 2025, Manufactures must use new refrigerants R454b, and R32.
Both R454b and R32 refrigerants have a much lower GWP (global warming potential) versus the outgoing R410a. The industry as a whole has gone through refrigerant changes in the past and in every case there have been hurdles. R12 refrigerant was banned in 1996, then R22 was phased out starting in 2010. Now at the end of 2024, R410a equipment has been phased out.
There is plenty of R410a refrigerant available to service your HVAC system should you need it. But, no new equipment.
There a supply chain issue at the movement (Spring-Summer 2025) with the predominant R454B refrigerant. The demand for the newer refrigerants is higher than expected, and the refrigerant bottles and bottle valves were not produced in high enough quantities to meet the demand.
R454b – High Demand
R32 – High Demand
R410a – Available for Maintenance
R410a Equipment – No Stock as of Dec 2024
R22 – Phased out in 2010
R12 – Phased out in 1996
Pricing of the new refrigerant has been driven up because of high demand, limited bottle availability, and proposed tariffs.
What Does New Refrigerants Mean to the Consumer?
Expect higher prices for HVAC systems replacements as compared to last year. If you do need a new HVAC system, you are going to be better off to buy it earlier in the season, the sooner, the better. Expectations are that the demand will continue to overwhelm supply through the Summer months and possibly going into next year.
Partial HVAC system replacements are not going to be an option! There are no R410a outdoor units available. All production was ceased December 31st 2024 and the supply was quickly depleted.
