What is a SEER rating anyway? SEER is an acronym for seasonal energy efficiency ratio. Not exactly a clear explanation. Let’s dig a little deeper. In simple terms it is a measure of how much electricity it takes to remove a given amount of heat, given a specific combination of system components. It is very much like the fuel efficiency of your car.
Determining SEER Rating
In order to determine the SEER rating of any given combination of equipment, a series of tests are performed by the AHRI (Air conditioning Heating and Refrigeration Institute). A SEER rating is then determined and that combination of components is assigned an AHRI #. Only combinations of components that are given an AHRI # will qualify for any rebates. Whene shopping for a higher efficiency system, that the combination of equipment that is quoted has an associated AHRI #.
Many systems are listed as XXSEER on the label. However it is the maximum SEER that is capable with a specific combination of indoor and outdoor equipment that is printed on that label. Not necessarily the combination that you are purchasing.
How Many SEER is Needed?
What SEER rating should you shoot for when selecting a new HVAC system for your home? That is a complicated question and it will depend on where you live, how the system is used and your budget. Higher SEER systems come with higher upfront costs, but will save you money on your electricity bill.
I do have good news ! If you are thinking about replacing an older heating and air conditioning system, chances are very high, that even a “base model” with todays technology will be much more efficient than what you have now !
